Should Justin Upton be a first round pick in standard 10-team fantasy baseball leagues?

Got an interesting question from a Twitter follower recently that made me re-think how I approach drafting and fantasy baseball in general.

The tweet was – @liebsj ”Need some #fantasybaseball advice!! Got 1st overall in 5-year Keeper league – go with Kemp, Pujols, J Upton or Miggy? PLEASE help.”

The fact that he was considering Matt Kemp and Justin Upton over Miguel Cabrera or Albert Pujols went against everything I had been told about drafting and running a fantasy baseball team even in a 5-year keeper league.

But is he onto something?

Every year in the majors there are players who have shown consistency in their performances season after season, but for whatever reason they failed to live up to expectations.

In some cases, the blame falls on injury, opportunity, or, in some cases, just plain bad luck. Players such as Dan Uggla and David Wright in 2011 come to mind. Although it can be hard to draft or trade for a player who burned you last year, there are some of those guys who not only deserve a second look in 2012, but are must own players.

Will Troy Tulowitzki be the premier fantasy shortstop in Major League Baseball in 2012?

With Spring Training in full swing, the 2012 fantasy baseball season is just around the corner. During the next week or so, fantasy baseball fiends across the United States will be flooding draft rooms to select their 2012 fantasy baseball lineups.

Due to a lack of depth at shortstop this season, the position is arguably the most important in the draft. The ideal shortstop will hit for average, steal bases, drive in runs and hit for solid power. However, there are simply not very many five tool shortstops nowadays. Thus, it would behoove you to draft a shortstop in the early rounds. (more…)

What do the birds have this year in fantasy?

Baltimore will have an uphill climb from the basement of the AL East in 2012. When you play in the same division as New York, Boston and Tampa, the chances of them finishing in the top three of that division are slim at best.

The Orioles don’t have many appealing fantasy options in 2012. SS J.J. Hardy hit 30 HR last season but has seen his share of time dealing with injuries. None of them are serious, but they are the day-to-day types that cost him an average of 50 games a season. He makes a nice middle infielder with pop to have, but be ready with a backup plan if you own Hardy. (more…)

Drafting Pitchers: A Risky Business!

While you’re spending time over the next few weeks drooling over previous year’s statistics, meticulously planning out your draft strategy and asking yourself ‘what went wrong last season?’ I want you to mull over the following draft advice.

Another stud pitcher calls it a season.

There are 30 teams in the MLB and each team carries about 12-13 pitchers. In a standard 5×5 Roto league or an h2h league, about 6 or 7 of those pitchers have a realistic possibility of earning a spot on a  fantasy roster. That’s 180 pitchers, right? If even a quarter of these pitchers have fantasy value then there are 60 plus pitchers who are available to you in the draft. Conversely, there are only a few SS who have a chance to produce in 4 or more of your offensive categories. The same issue exists at 3B. Only a handful of players can guarantee you the stats you need to compete year in and year out in your coveted Fantasy Baseball Pool. So, ask yourself: ‘Why am I drafting a pitcher in the first 5 rounds?’ (more…)
