Fantasy Strategy: Platooning your hitters
You know, I hear all the time about how certain players are substantially better against left-handed pitchers, or maybe exceptionally weak against righties, or vice-versa, or whatever. But just recently did I consider employing this knowledge as a part of my strategy. Sure, if Carlos Pena was up against a tough lefty, I’d sit him, more than likely, but I didn’t check his splits until recently. He’s currently batting .122 against left-handed pitchers, against righties hitting .252, with four times as many homers (16) in twice as many games (the ratio is less drastic looking at at-bats, I’ll admit). Britton has sorted himself out and appears ready to shine
The call-ups have been come at a steady clip in this young season and rookies are establishing themselves much sooner than ever before. Now more than ever teams are bucking the trend of keeping their young stars down in the minors due to financial concerns and bringing them up to the show in hopes they can contribute right away. It seems as though more top prospects broke camp with the big league club this year than usual and they have shown they belong, both in the majors and on your fantasy baseball squad. Only a couple of these dudes found themselves dropping off the list this week and one guy in particular surpassed even the wildest of expectations.

Fantasy Baseball owners should expect improvement from Garza.
Now that the baseball season is almost a month old, we have enough innings to examine the BABIPs of some of the starting pitchers out there and see if those numbers can tell us anything. Admittedly, we’re still laboring under very small sample sizes with most of them, but the data should help us sort out who’s been very lucky or unlucky and who’s going to improve or backslide as the season progresses.
It’s never too early to think about trading for a pitcher who’s under-performing and has been giving his owner headaches or — conversely — getting as much in return as you possibly can from a pitcher who’s pitching well over his head. (more…)

Another season, another new jersey for the crafty lefty.
Let’s face it: some pitchers just aren’t the same after the All-Star break. Whether it’s the brief hiatus from the game or simply a mental funk, some of the most dominant guys in the first half just won’t be the same in the second.
