Pickups 4/11/2012 Fantasy Baseball

Could Furcal be headed back to fantasy stardom?

It’s the start of the fantasy baseball season and there are already a few significant injuries. Closers, Drew Storen, Andrew Bailey and Ryan Madson are all sidelined already and high round picks such as Carl Crawford and Ryan Howard are also out. Your going to have to find replacements till they come back so you don’t get in too much of a hole in your fantasy baseball standings. There are also some fantasy baseball prospects you can target that should help you get through the injuries.

These guys aren’t going to win your fantasy baseball league for you, but they will help ease the pain of losing one of your highly drafted players for a long period of time. Most of these guys are a stop gap and not someone your going to be able to count on for the entire season. These players are available in over 50% of 2012 fantasy baseball leagues so grab them while you can. 2012 Fantasy Baseball: When is it Time to Panic?

When is it Time to Panic?

Kevin Youkilis is 0-for-2012

When is it time to panic in a Roto league? A H2H league? Is it after Opening Week? Two weeks into the season? May 1? All-Star Break?

The answer is a bit more simple than you might think. It’s never too early or too late to panic. We all play fantasy baseball for fun and bragging rights and part of playing the game is managing your team as you see fit. So, if you have identified a problem with one of your players then it is time to address it. If one of your players is raking but you don’t think he can keep it up then it is time to see what you can get in a trade.

However, there are times to be patient and give a player time to ‘right the ship’ so to speak.

I’ve been getting add/drop questions since last Thursday so let’s just address some of those questions by taking a look at players who have either under-performed or outperformed expectations in Fantasy Baseball‘s Opening Week. (more…)

2012 Fantasy Baseball: Pitching Preview – Opening Week

2012 Fantasy Baseball: Pitching Preview – Opening Week

Avoid Jair Jurrjens for Opening Week and maybe the entire 2012 fantasy baseball season.

To borrow a phrase from announcer Bruce Buffer, “It’s time!”

The MLB season kicks off this week. So owners who stream pitching in head-to-head matchups are hitting the waiver wire and, with injuries to guys such as Tim Hudson, some fantasy baseball owners may be scrambling for starters already.

With that in mind here are guys to pickup and some guys to avoid.

Add

Kyle Lohse vs. Marlins, Reds – especially in H2H matchups as he’ll have two starts this week – one against the Miami Marlins on Opening Day and another against the Cincinnati Reds on April 10. Some folks feel that Lohse got  lucky with a .269 BABIP against in 2011. But keep in mind that he set career bests in HR/9 and HR/FB while tying a career best 2.01 BB/9.

Matt Harrison vs. White Sox – a ground ball lefty, Harrison set a career best in HR/9, HR/BB, BB/9 and K/9 in 2011. He does walk a few too many hitters, but if he can keep the HRs in check and force double-play balls as often as he did last year there’s no reason to think he can’t repeat his 2011 numbers of 3.39 ERA and 1.28 WHIP.

Jamie Moyer vs. Astros – Moyer is back and looks to show all the young whipper-snappers that he’s still got it. His spring numbers look terrific (2.50 ERA in 18 IP) and he’ll get one of the league’s least-potent offenses on April 7 away from Coors Field. (more…)

2012 Fantasy Baseball: First Round Drama

Should Justin Upton be a first round pick in standard 10-team fantasy baseball leagues?

Steve Hamby @SteveOnSportsOK on Twitter

Got an interesting question from a Twitter follower recently that made me re-think how I approach drafting and fantasy baseball in general.

The tweet was – @liebsj ”Need some #fantasybaseball advice!! Got 1st overall in 5-year Keeper league – go with Kemp, Pujols, J Upton or Miggy? PLEASE help.”

The fact that he was considering Matt Kemp and Justin Upton over Miguel Cabrera or Albert Pujols went against everything I had been told about drafting and running a fantasy baseball team even in a 5-year keeper league.

But is he onto something?

Here are some player comparisons from 2011. Which one would you take?

2012 Fantasy Baseball: Players Who Will Bounce Back

2012 Fantasy Baseball: Players Who Will Bounce Back

Will Angels left fielder Vernon Wells have a bounce back season in 2012?

Afflicted to Effective (Players who were “unlucky” in 2011 that could help your fantasy baseball team in 2012)

Steve Hamby @SteveOnSportsOK on Twitter

Every year in the majors there are players who have shown consistency in their performances season after season, but for whatever reason they failed to live up to expectations.

In some cases, the blame falls on injury, opportunity, or, in some cases, just plain bad luck. Players such as Dan Uggla and David Wright in 2011 come to mind. Although it can be hard to draft or trade for a player who burned you last year, there are some of those guys who not only deserve a second look in 2012, but are must own players.

But first, how do we define bad luck? (more…)
