Is Albert Pujols in your lineup because of his name or his performance?

 

 

Oftentimes, fantasy baseball owners get a little caught up in the name game – allowing players to occupy their rosters based on name recognition instead of performance while better players, although not as popular, are outperforming them.

It’s important to balance the knowledge of a player’s past performance with an objective look at how they are performing in the moment.

With that in mind, here are 20 stats: 10 for well-known players and 10 for under-the-radar types.

Should Justin Upton be a first round pick in standard 10-team fantasy baseball leagues?

Got an interesting question from a Twitter follower recently that made me re-think how I approach drafting and fantasy baseball in general.

The tweet was – @liebsj ”Need some #fantasybaseball advice!! Got 1st overall in 5-year Keeper league – go with Kemp, Pujols, J Upton or Miggy? PLEASE help.”

The fact that he was considering Matt Kemp and Justin Upton over Miguel Cabrera or Albert Pujols went against everything I had been told about drafting and running a fantasy baseball team even in a 5-year keeper league.

But is he onto something?

Albert Pujols is ready to make the Angels a "real" contender.

Among the hot topics in fantasy baseball for the past few years has been debating who is the best slugger in baseball. While a lot of players have deservingly so been mentioned, Alex Rodriguez, Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera, the one name who seems to be a unanimous decision is Albert Pujols. The two-time World Series champ has thrived in St. Louis ever since he started playing for the Cardinals in 2001 in which he hit 37 home runs. And as Albert has thrived, his teammates have thrived as well. Guys like Matt Holiday, Scott Rolen, and Jim Edmonds have had some of their best statistical seasons being surrounded by Pujols, and fantasy baseball owners should expect the same from these years Los Angeles Angels. With Major League Baseball’s “Opening Day” set for April 5th, weekly fantasy baseball games are right around the corner. You know what that means; it’s time to predict the top fantasy baseball players of 2012.

1. Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers

Cabrera had yet another stellar season for the Tigers in 2011. He finished in the top 10 in the American League in seven offensive categories. In other words, he is a fantasy stud.
