We are a week removed from the All-Star break and it’s apparent that some of our guys listed are still shaking off the rust from the vacation. Each category looks quite different than it did last week; having said that, it is based on a shortened week’s response. Here are this week’s fantasy baseball positional power rankings…
Catcher
2(3) Brian McCann, ATL: Another great week at the plate for McCann, his .385 AVG this week allowed him to plate six for the Braves. (1 R, 1 HR, 6 RBI, .385 AVG)
3(4) Joe Mauer, MIN: It sure doesn’t look like his hip is bothering him at the plate right now. (2 R, 5 RBI, .348 AVG)
4(NR) Jorge Posada, NYY: “Hip Hip Jorge!” Any catcher with 2 HR and an average over .300 is a great starter. (2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI, .333 AVG)
5(1) Miguel Olivo, COL: It was a terrible week for Olivo but because it was just such a limited sample, he still rounds out the top 5. (1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, .083 AVG)
on the cusp: John Buck, TOR; Kurt Suzuki, OAK; Carlos Santana, CLE; Buster Posey, SF, Bengie Molina, TEX
First Baseman
1(2) Miguel Cabrera, DET: After a short stint away, Cabrera has blasted his way back in to the number one spot. (3 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI, .250 AVG)
2(4) Albert Pujols, STL: Not the best week for The Machine, but because of his amazing consistency, he sits at number two. (4 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, .333 AVG)
3(NR) Ryan Howard, PHI: Howard is a beast in the second half and he’s gotten off to another blazing start after the break. (5 R, 4 HR, 9 RBI, .300 AVG)
5(3) Kevin Youkilis, BOS: Arguably this year’s biggest All-Star snub, Youk just keeps going and going like the Energizer Bunny. (2 R, 2 RBI, .389 AVG)
on the cusp: Justin Morneau, MIN; Prince Fielder, MIL; Carlos Pena, TAM; Mark Teixeira, NYY; Mark Reynolds, ARI
Second Baseman
1(1) Robinson Cano, NYY: I said it once, and I will say it again: It’s going to take a lot for Cano to drop from number 1. (3 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, .250 AVG)
2(4) Rickie Weeks, MIL: Weeks is burning up the charts for the second week in a row. Three homers for the speedy second baseman to tighten the race to the top. (6 R, 3 HR, 6 RBI, .381 AVG)
3(3) Brandon Phillips, CIN: Phillips saw a dip in average this week but did manage to swipe a base, which certainly didn’t hurt any owners. (3 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 SB .235 AVG)
4(2) Martin Prado, ATL: Not a terrible fantasy week, just not that good, either. (4 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, .278 AVG)
5(NR) Ian Kinsler, TEX: Kinsler rewarded his owners this week at the plate by notching five RBI. (4 R, 1 HR, 5 RBI, .500 AVG)
on the cusp: Dan Uggla, FLA; Kelly Johnson, ARI; Howie Kendrick, LAA; Placido Polanco, PHI; Orlando Hudson, MIN
Third Baseman
1(1) David Wright, NYM: Although Wright has slowed down from his torrid pace, he still had a semi-productive week at the plate so he stays at number one.(1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, .277 AVG)
2(2) Adrian Beltre, BOS: Beltre is the most consistent of the bunch. (2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI, .400 AVG)
3(NR) Evan Longoria, TAM: It has been too long for Longoria not to be in the top-five, and his five runs coupled with a great average are exactly what he needed. (5 R, 2 RBI, 1 SB, .438 AVG)
5(4) Alex Rodriguez, NYY: It could be a very interesting week for A-Rod as he’s in hot pursuit of career HR # 600. (2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, .333 AVG)
on the cusp: Michael Young, TEX; Kevin Youkilis, BOS; Jose Bautista, TOR; Martin Prado, ATL; Scott Rolen, CIN
Short Stops
1(4) Rafael Furcal, LAD: This is what we call “en fuego”. (1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 SB, .400 AVG)
2(2) Elvis Andrus, TEX: Another solid week for Andrus as he just keeps rewarding owners. (4 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB, .329 AVG)
3(4) Derek Jeter, NYY: The Captain didn’t have a great average and wasn’t all that productive, but it wasn’t a great week for the position. (2 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB, .166 AVG)
4(1) Hanley Ramirez, FLA: The numbers don’t lie. (1 RBI, .157 AVG)
5(NR) Cliff Pennington, OAK: Cliff has been under the radar all season but a poor week for the original top-five has given him his chance. (2 R, 2 RBI, 2 SB, .455 AVG)
on the cusp: Juan Uribe, SF; Alex Gonzalez, ATL; Ryan Theriot, CHC; Jose Reyes, NYM, Erick Aybar, LAA
Outfielders
1(1) Josh Hamilton, TEX: The best story in fantasy baseball might be having the best season in baseball. (3 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, .455 AVG)
2(3) Chris Young, ARI: Young is steadily moving up the charts, this with some help from teammates. (6 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, .411 AVG)
4(5) Alex Rios, CWS: A whopping 5 RBI in one week is aiding Rios’ case to again be a top-three OF. (4 R, 1 HR, 5 RBI, .333 AVG)
5(2) Carl Crawford, TAM: It was a short week for CC and he still managed two more steals. (1 R, 1 RBI, 2 SB, .250 AVG)
on the cusp: Nelson Cruz, TEX; Justin Upton, ARI; Corey Hart, MIL; Juan Pierre, CWS; Brennan Boesch, DET
