David Ortiz - Big Papi has had success against Mark Buehrle like few hitters have, making him a solid start in daily fantasy baseball games tonight. In 58 career at bats, Ortiz has tallied 20 hits (good for a .345 average) and 10 extra base hits. He has knocked in 11 runs on those 20 hits, and is a good bet to add to that total as the current Sox are batting .326 against the Miami lefty.
Adam Dunn – Dunn is always a good power play, but when he hits for a solid average against a pitcher it is a rarity. But that is the case tonight as he faces Cardinal ace Adam Wainwright, whom has surrendered a .444 batting average to the White Sox slugger. More impressive is his plate discipline, as Dunn has accepted 8 free passes as compared to striking out only 3 times. Expect Dunn to be on base at the least, with the potential to leave the yard.
Seth Smith – Maybe he’s not a household name, but for daily fantasy baseball leagues, Smith is a player to remember. The A’s left fielder is batting .550 over the last week and has a solid .300 average against Ian Kennedy. An amazing 83.3% of Smith’s hits against Kennedy have gone for extra base hits, meaning it may only take one good swing to provide you with enough fantasy production to justify rostering Smith.
Players to avoid:
Kansas City Royals – It is a tiny sample size, but the current Royals have had about as little success as possible against the Brewers Zack Greinke. The 4 Kansas City players that have faced the Brewers stud have only 1 hit in 29 at bats (a .034 batting average). Eric Hosmer is heating up, but his ceiling for production is certainly limited if there is no body on base.
Prince Fielder – Don’t blindly roster the Tigers first basemen in your fantasy baseball league today, as he has had very little success against the Cubs Paul Maholm. He’s batting a poultry .125 against the lefty with 2.5 times as many strikeouts as hits. Fielder has only 1 homer this season against left handed pitchers and sees his batting average drop 49 points against southpaws. There are plenty of better options/values at first base today; stay away from Prince.
