Davd Ortiz

Ortiz is turning things around in Boston.

Risers:

David Ortiz, BOS, DH

The season started and David Ortiz started out exactly as he did in 2009. Last year he hit .185 with 1 HR in April and May combined. In the four months after that Ortiz hit .264 with 26 HR’s. This year he hit .143 with 1 HR in April. In 53 at bats in May, Ortiz is hitting .358 with 7 HR’s. Ortiz looks to be going at a similar pace this year, except one thing, he is starting earlier. Closer Report (May. 13th)

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

If you have Nunez you may want to consider him a sell-high candidate. Then again...

After looking at this past week’s success and failures, I think you will find that using an early pick on a “stud” closer could have been a waste. The “other” closers seem to be the ones picking up the slack this year. It is still early in the season, but if you look at the top saves guys I think you would be surprised.

Grade A

Leo Nunez (Marlins): With another below-average week from closers, Nunez was hands down the best. He went a perfect 3-for-3 in SVO and struck out five. Nunez only let one batter on base in three innings pitched, he has a 0.63 WHIP this year.

Octavio Dotel (Pirates): The Pirates closer struck out four while recording two saves and blowing none. He allowed just two people on base with one walk and one HBP. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh fans (if there are any) he is not one of the aforementioned late-round picks who are performing at a high level this year. He has a 7.43 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. (more…)

Brett Gardner leads the league in stolen bases

1. Brett Gardner, OF, New York Yankees

One man’s misfortune, is another man’s opportunity. In this case, the young outfielder is making most of the opportunity he has been given with Curtis Granderson on the DL. Gardner, who has been platooning in the OF, is not the Yanks’ everyday center fielder. In 27 games this season, Gardner has a .348 average with 31 hits and 24 runs. Most stunning number is 14.. Gardner is leading the league in stolen bases. No signs at all of Gardner slowing down. Even when Granderson comes back, Gardner will see a huge increase in time in LF with Randy Winn struggling mightily. Gardner is slowly becoming a fan favorite in the Bronx.

2010 Fantasy Baseball: Sleepers Tips

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Braves Jason HeywardThere is a debate in the fantasy baseball world over the exact definition as to what a fantasy baseball sleeper is. Whether you want to view sleepers as rookies coming up from the minors or veterans who haven’t gotten a chance to prove themselves yet, well, that’s up to you.

The easiest way to view it though, is as a player who is statically predicted to be significantly better then their previous year, or simply a player that hasn’t found his opportunity yet, and is set-up in a situation where he has a great chance for success. (more…)
