Brett Gardner leads the league in stolen bases

1. Brett Gardner, OF, New York Yankees

One man’s misfortune, is another man’s opportunity. In this case, the young outfielder is making most of the opportunity he has been given with Curtis Granderson on the DL. Gardner, who has been platooning in the OF, is not the Yanks’ everyday center fielder. In 27 games this season, Gardner has a .348 average with 31 hits and 24 runs. Most stunning number is 14.. Gardner is leading the league in stolen bases. No signs at all of Gardner slowing down. Even when Granderson comes back, Gardner will see a huge increase in time in LF with Randy Winn struggling mightily. Gardner is slowly becoming a fan favorite in the Bronx.

2. Fred Lewis, LF, Toronto Blue Jays

Lewis has hit safely in eight of his last nine games. Six of those games have been multi-hit games. He’s one of the hottest AL outfielders right now and is a great pickup.

3. Jhoulys Chacin, P, Colorado Rockies

Two starts, ERA of 0.00. Can’t get much better than that. In those two starts the rookie has pitched 15.3 innings, allowed only 7 hits, 5 walks and has struck out 14. With a game this week against Washington, look for another strong outing.

4. David Freese, 3B, St. Louis Cardinals

The rookie has been doing all he is asked by Tony Larussa. After being named the player of the week last week, Freese has continued his hot hitting. He is currently hitting .333 on the year. Upcoming games against Houston and Cincinnati should only see an improvement on those numbers.

5. Matt Thornton, RP, Chicago White Sox

Pure speculation at this point. Ozzie is not too happy at all with closer Bobby Jenks after he has had two straight poor outing and blew a 2-run lead against the Jays on Sunday. He gave up a go ahead homer in the 9th inning on Friday’s game against the Jays as well. Look for Thornton to be thrown into the closer role this week, especially at the beginning of the week. Thornton has 25 strikeouts in 15.1 innings this year.
